Some tips from Carrie:
-
While waiting for water to warm up, catch excess water in a bowl and use for houseplants or pets
-
Use the dishwasher only with full loads - if you have a newer dishwasher, don't pre-rinse, it's unnecessary - just scrape plates and load the dishwasher properly
-
Handwashing isn't always the most efficient approach!
-
For cold drinking water, keep a pitcher in the fridge so you don't have o let the faucet run
-
Make sure you have low flow faucet aerators installed
-
Don't use the in-sink garbage disposal, compost instead
Bath
-
Shorter showers, fewer baths (even cutting your shower by 2 minutes will save 1,000 gallons a year!)
-
Low flow toilets - check to see if yours is older than 1993.
-
Make sure your toilet tank is set to the right level - and check for leaks using foodcoloring
-
No running water while shaving or brushing teeth! For Pete’s sake!
Garden
-
Water early (before sunrise) or late (after sunset), for no more than 5-7 minutes- check for runoff and stop watering once you begin to see run off
-
Make sure you're not watering the sidewalk- check sprinkler heads!
-
Plant for low water use
-
Mulch for water retention
-
Switch to an edible landscape!
