Stop running!
- Use a sink full of water instead of continuously running the faucet when hand washing anything - produce, dishes, etc.
- Don't use running water to thaw food.
- Store a pitcher of water in the refrigerator for drinking- so you won't have to let your faucet run to get a cold glass of water!
- Collect clean water from your kitchen faucet by keeping a small bucket or bowl in/near the sink. Use the collected water on your houseplants or outdoor container plants.
- Use the garbage disposal sparingly - you have to run the water every time! Compost instead and save gallons of water a day.
Fix that leaky faucet
If you detect a leaky faucet, try to repair it as soon as possible. A faucet that drips just one drop of water per second can waste five to ten gallons of water per day.
A leaky faucet usually indicates that you need to replace or add a washer behind the knob or handle used to turn the water on and off. This is a fairly minor do-it-yourself repair, and the cost and resource savings are well worth it. The washer typically costs less than one dollar but will save between 1,800 and 3,600 gallons of water per year. Those resource savings translate into average savings between $3.50 and $8.00 in water costs per year.
If you need to replace the entire faucet, you may want to call a licensed plumber. |
