Why saving home energy matters
Residential energy use accounts for 20% of greenhouse gas emissions in North America - the rest is from transportation, commercial and industrial use. Greenhouse gases (Carbon, methane) in the atmosphere at the wrong levels have a negative impact on the temperature and the climate - to the point where water and food supplies are threatened and weather systems become more violent. Plus, it’s expensive to waste it! Power prices have gone up 8 to 10% a year in many areas for the last decade. Cheap combustion power is a thing of the past.
Can you make a difference?
While the power companies, renewable energy suppliers, and legislators are working on addressing clean energy at the production source, we can make a big impact by reducing our wasted energy at home and at the office - and by speaking up.
What takes the most energy in the home?
Heating and cooling air and water take a huge amount of energy. So anytime you’re doing doing these things at home - running AC or heat, using the refrigerator, showering, taking baths, washing dishes or doing laundry - that’s the time to pay special attention to how you do it, at what level and for how long. Get easy to implement energy saving tips here, or sign up and change your energy consumption room by room. You also have the chance to reduce hidden energy costs (through the movement of water and waste) by implementing water savings tips, and striving for zero waste.
What could the impact be?
We can easily cut our consumption by 20%; probably as much as 50% with a little more effort. 20% would reduce the US greenhouse gas impact by 4%. 20% equates to about a $500 per year savings for a family of 4. Take the 20% challenge and earn while you learn and strive for change.
